Multi-State Concealed Carry Course (MS-CCW). This dynamic 8 to 9 hour classroom session covers handgun safety, defensive ammunition, concealed carry holsters, color codes of mental awareness, avoidance, and responsibility. Additional topics include the use of deadly force in self-defense; shoot vs don’t shoot scenarios, laws, carry restrictions, and other vital information. A required live-fire qualification course is part of the program. This course meets or exceeds the requirements for obtaining a concealed carry permit (aka "CCW") in both Colorado and Utah. Colorado residents MUST obtain a Colorado permit to carry in Colorado.
Introduction to Defensive Handgun. This 4-hour introductory session covers safe and effective presentation from the holster, rapid aiming techniques (flash-sight picture and point-shooting techniques), trigger trap and reset for better follow-through, after-action movement and scanning, and other important information for concealed carry permit holders who want more than the just the permit itself.
NRA STUDENT COURSES
NON-FIREARMS COURSES
Home Firearm Safety Course is a non-shooting course and teaches students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition in the home. This is a four-hour course for safe gun handling that is conducted in the classroom only. A great class for family and those concerned about firearm safety in the home.
Refuse To Be A Victim® Seminars teach the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for developing a strategy for one's personal safety in the home and outside the home. It is not a firearms instruction course. The seminar includes classroom instruction on a variety of crime prevention strategies, from criminal psychology to automobile crimes to cyber crime. It includes common weaknesses that criminals may take advantage of, and teaches a variety of corrective measures that are practical, inexpensive, and easy to follow. Seminars can vary in length (usually about 4 hours, but can be expanded to eight hours), and may be modified to suit the needs of a particular audience.
HANDGUN RELATED COURSES
Basic Pistol Shooting Course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely. This course is at least 8-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position and two handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development.
FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation — Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training — is the NRA’s response to the American public’s need for a firearm orientation program for new purchasers. It is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific pistol action type for classes of four or fewer students. This course is at least three to four hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific pistol action type.
Basic Personal Protection In The Home (PPITH) Course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family in your home, and to provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense. This is at least an eight-hour course. It includes a minimum of one hour on the laws concerning the use of deadly force in your home. Students should expect to shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition. Students must be law abiding, adults (at least 21 years old), and experienced shooters.
Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home (PPOTH) Course is both comprehensive and intensive in its approach to equip the defensive shooting candidate with the skills needed to survive serious adversity. This two day (14 hour) course teaches students the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective and responsible use of a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home. It includes a minimum of one hour on the laws concerning the use of deadly force on the street. Students use a quality strong side hip holster that covers the trigger, or a holster purse. The PPOTH course is divided into two levels (basic and advanced). Level one is a nine-hour course and offers the essential knowledge and skills necessary to carry, store, and use a firearm safely and effectively for personal protection outside the home. Students should expect to spend several hours on the range and shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition. Level two involves five additional hours on the range and approximately 115 rounds of ammunition. Students must be at least 21 years of age and possess defensive pistol skills presented in the NRA PPITH Course.

The program meets or exceeds requirements for the Colorado & Utah non-resident permits and other states as well. Course Description The content of this course has been approved by the State of Utah for the Utah CCW Permit. It is not an NRA course. This course also meets the training requirements of a handgun safety course for the Colorado and selected other state CCW permits including the Wyoming permit which is available only to residents of that state.
As required by Utah, this course covers handgun safety and Utah laws first in four (4) to six (6) hours then it covers shoot / don’t shoot scenarios, and Colorado laws in an addendum.
Some counties in Colorado are no longer accepting applications without a live-fire range session. The live-fire range session also meets the training requirements for the Florida CCW Permit as well as the CCW permits issued by several other states.
A separate handgun class such as NRA Basic pistol or NRA First Steps Pistol and fee will be required if the student does not demonstrate proficiency in safe handling of their handgun and general firearms familiarity, or in the event of a safety violation during the classroom handling session.
We STRONGLY urge all those seeking a CCW permit to take a additional training in conjunction with their CCW course such as NRA Person Protection in the Home (PPITH), NRA Personal Protection OUTSIDE The Home, or other defensive handgun training courses with appropriate live-fire sessions.
To be safe and effective in presenting and using a handgun from concealment for protection, you MUST have specific defensive handgun training from qualified instructors. DO NOT shortcut your safety by just taking a basic handgun safety course to meet the minimum training requirements for a permit.
While you are waiting one to three months for your permit application to be processed, take a defensive handgun course so that you can begin to develop the skills that you must have if you find it necessary to use your handgun for protection.
